A Week in the Life

Hi Guys!

I’ve never done one of these style posts before, but I love reading them and finding out what everyone has been up to (I’m just really nosey) so I thought I would give it a try myself and I hope you all enjoy seeing what I’ve been up to!

I was meant to be in University today but decided not to go as the lectures that are on don’t relate to the course essay question that I’ll be submitting in a few weeks time. So instead I woke up around 9:30/10 AM ish and sat and watched TV for a few hours (boring I know). I was planning on posting a Halloween Biscuit post tomorrow, but I made the biscuits today and when I iced them I realised just how AWFUL they look! So that wasted a few hours of my day but on the plus side I do have lots of biscuits to eat now and I’m not complaining about that! I spent the rest of the afternoon (and into the evening) binging episodes of Netflix, working on my dissertation and arranging future blog posts.

The only picture I took of the biscuits before I iced them!

I was meant to be in University again today but decided not to go (bad student I know!) but because of how far I live, sometimes there isn’t any point me doing a 4 hour round trip when I can get on with lots of reading at home. When I say lots of reading I really mean sit in bed and watch Netflix all day but we don’t really need to talk about that. I met my friend for some tea at Pizza Hut and it was SO lovely to see her as I hadn’t seen her for a few weeks, we both ate so much food (obviously had dessert) and I came out feeling like I was about to burst! I spent the rest of the evening feeling sorry for myself because I ate so much food I had a stomach ache.

Myself and my boyfriend are moving out of our house so today was a packing day. The house that we’re currently in is our first home so when we moved in we didn’t really have much, but now we’re leaving there is just so much to pack away into boxes and move! It’s crazy how much stuff we’ve gathered over the past year and a half (and how much rubbish I’ve thrown away). The house is now currently filled with boxes (which are all too heavy for me to move myself may I add as I filled them too much) so I’ll have to wait for my boyfriend to come home as he works away, and he can move them instead! After packing all day, I spent the evening at my mum’s spending time with the family.

Up bright and early this morning with a 5:45 AM start (yawn!). Back to University today but its not too bad as its only for a few hours and then I’m not in again until Monday (hooray!). I had a meeting with my dissertation advisor at 10 AM and I’m extremely happy that I actually seem to know which path I’m going to take now, it all gets so confusing when I have so many ideas running around my head! I had my final dissertation lecture, grabbed a subway and headed back to the car for the 2 hour journey home. I spent the evening helping my mum run a stall at a local craft evening, she’s a baker and run’s her own business called Debelicious Cakes, she has her own Facebook page here if you would like to have a look, her cakes are incredible!

I’ve been looking forward to this day all week! Even if I don’t particularly have much planned on the weekends I do love it when the week rolls round to a Friday. I think it’s because everyone’s usually in a good mood! I planned on getting so much done today but that didn’t really happen (when does it?). I started moving a few boxes into storage and making the house clearer which feels fab as I now have more room for activities! I spent the evening at my nan’s with the family watching the village fireworks from her garden, it’s started to turn into a little tradition which I love as its always something to look forward to this time of year! Every year I’m usually so busy taking pictures of the fireworks I miss out watching them properly so this year I put my camera down and just sat and enjoyed them!

I didn’t have anything major planned for today so I woke up around 9AM ish and just had a leisurely morning pottering around the house getting bits done. I feel like there’s so much to do lately and so little time which majorly stresses me out. So I’ve been writing a list every morning of what I want to achieve in that day so I can just focus on a few things and don’t feel too overwhelmed with everything!  I spent the evening having a meal with my mum at Frankie and Benny’s as neither of us had any plans, I had the brownies and ice cream for dessert which was delicious! I always look at the dessert menu in any restaurant before the main menu, as dessert is obviously the most important part!

My sleeping pattern is all over the place at the moment so I woke up ridiculously early and couldn’t get back to sleep. I didn’t mind though as I had a full day planned out with some friends shopping! I picked up my friend Jordy and we travelled to Norwich to meet Emma. We had some lunch at a really cute café and had a nosey around the shops. I even bought a Christmas present (which I am extremely happy with as I had been looking for it for awhile!). All the shops had their Christmas decorations out and all the Christmas lights up which makes me feel so festive! It was such a lovely day as I hadn’t seen either of the girls for months! Once I got home, I ordered myself a Chinese then had a long soak in the bath and caught up on x-factor!

So that’s what I’ve been up to lately! I hope you all enjoy this post, it’s something a little different but I’ve really enjoyed writing it and its something I can look back on!

What have you all been up to lately? I’d love to hear!

Happy Reading!

The Gunpowder Plot

Hi Guys!

Seeing as its the 5th November obviously I had to do a Bonfire Night themed post! Every year I go out and watch the fireworks, usually at a few different events over the weekend, but I never actually question why we celebrate firework night. I know the basics of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot but I’ve never properly looked into this to see why/what actually happened. I love learning new things and looking back at history so I thought this was the perfect time to do some research and tell you what I find out!

The 5th November celebrates the failed attempt
of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot

A group of Roman Catholic Activists wasn’t happy that Protestant King James I acceded the throne. They wanted freedom to practice their religion, and thought they could make England Catholic again by killing King James I and his ministers by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. Most people (including myself before I looked into this) think that Guy Fawkes was the Gunpowder Plot’s ringleader, but in actual fact it was a Mr Robert Catesby who was known for speaking out against the English crown. Catesby and his group hid 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellars underneath the Houses of Parliament and Guy Fawkes was tasked with guarding the gunpowder. The whole thing began to unravel when a Catholic loyal to the crown received an anonymous letter advising to avoid the Houses of Parliament as “they shall receive a big blow”. The king soon became aware of the letter and ordered a search of Westminster Palace, and Guy Fawkes was discovered with the gunpowder (hence why everyone things he’s the ringleader!).

What happened next?
The conspirators were either resisting capture or hung, drawn and quartered. When Catesby heard of the failed attempt at blowing up the Houses of Parliament he fled to the midlands leaving Guy Fawkes to be put on trial. Fawkes and the other conspirators were found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. They were all publicly hung, drawn and quartered except Fawkes who wanted to avoid his execution so leapt from a platform on the gallows and died of a broken neck. His body was quartered though as a warning to others! The cellar that Catesby and his conspirators used to store the gunpowder no longer exists as it was destroyed in a fire in 1834, but the Houses of Parliament are still searched to this day by the Yeoman of the Guard to make sure no modern day Guy Fawkes is hiding. The lantern Guy Fawkes carried is now in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford which I think is so interesting and would love to see!

Where are we now?
As the news spread of the plot people began lighting bonfires to celebrate the fact that King James I was still alive. Celebrations started getting bigger with people letting off fireworks and mini explosives. Straw dummies of Guy Fawkes were made and children would walk the streets shouting ‘penny for the guy’ before throwing it on a bonfire to drive evil spirits away. I remember making a straw Guy Fawkes when I was younger and throwing him on top of the burning bonfire, but I didn’t know what it symbolised or why I was doing it! I definitely agree with what I’ve read online that the religious and political view of the Gunpowder Plot has since lost its original focus, so next time I’m celebrating bonfire night I’ll remember exactly why I am and think back to 1605!

Does anyone else know any interesting facts about Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night? I’d love to know what you think about it all!

June 19th 1996 was a Wednesday and I was born via C-section

2. My favourite colour is Red

Even though I hate flying in an aeroplane, me being able to fly is different, I think I get it from my love of Tinkerbell!

17. I hate all green vegetables

18. I love meeting new people
I’ve always loved meeting new people. I used to go to so many after school clubs and I loved going to kids clubs on holiday. One reason why I started blogging!

24. I love to read
If you saw my Introduction Post that I wrote earlier this year (you can read it here) you would have seen that one of my New Years Resolutions was to read more. I love reading, for many years I spent all my time at the library with my head in a book!

25. I sleep with a teddy bear my boyfriend got me
I’m 21 I promise! Okay it sounds slightly strange, but he works away and I very rarely get to see him so I like cuddling it when I’m falling asleep!

Halloween Films You Must Watch!

Hi Guys!

I’m back at it again with another Halloween themed post. This time I’m going to be telling you all about the Halloween films you have to watch! I don’t like scary films at all and would say these films fit more into the ‘family’ category which are suitable for the whole family to watch!

So here goes..

1. Halloween Town, Halloween Town 2: Kalabar’s Revenge,
Halloween Town High & Return to Halloween Town
2. Hocus Pocus
3.  Hotel Transylvania and Hotel Transylvania 2
4. Bewitched
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas
6. Corpse Bride
7. Ghost Busters
8. Casper
9. All Hallows Eve
10. The Haunted Mansion

So they’re my 10 Halloween Must Watch Films! Not in any particular order but Halloween Town and Hocus Pocus are my all time favourite! I love the films due to the cast (so many great actors/actresses), the soundtracks, the costumes, the storylines and what we can learn from them! Especially Halloween Town which shows emotion and love, showing that we should be kind to everyone regardless of what they look like!

There are lots more that I would recommend, but I would love to hear what films you’re obsessing over this October!

Leave a comment and let me know!

Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with a Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting

Hi Guys!

With it being mid October and Halloween on the horizon I thought I would have ago at baking some Pumpkin Spiced Cupcakes. I’ve never made these before (or anything with Pumpkin in actually) so I was slightly sceptical on how they would turn out. I know I like Pumpkin due to the amount of PSL’s I drink every year when October rolls around, but I was still apprehensive about how Pumpkin would work in a cupcake batter.

I got the recipe from here and I’ve also seen Zoella do a blog post on this recipe too so it must be a good’en! The recipe states that the whole process should take around 1 hour 40 minutes (although it can easily be done within an hour) and the batter will make 24 cupcakes. Now, I was only able to make 19 cupcakes but I did fill my paper cases with ALOT of batter so I could have easily made 24 if I wanted more.

The ingredients you’ll need for the cupcakes:
280g plain flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon of ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
110g butter, softened
200g caster sugar
5 tablespoons brown soft sugar
2 eggs
180ml milk
250g pumpkin cooked and pureed

The ingredients you’ll need for the cream cheese frosting:
200g cream cheese
50g butter
350g icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

I really like this recipe as most of the ingredients are things you’ll have lurking in the back of your cupboards, the only things I had to purchase was the pumpkin puree and the cream cheese. The recipe states you need 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg and allspice, which I thought I had but turns out I didn’t so you can make the recipe without them. I did also buy the Halloween sprinkles but these are obviously completely optional and don’t make any difference to the taste of the cupcakes.

The recipe is as follows:
1. Preheat your oven to 190c or Gas Mark 5 and line your cupcake tins with paper cases. Sift together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, all spice, salt, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda and set aside.
2. Beat together the butter, caster sugar and brown sugar with an electric mixer until its turned light and fluffy. Add the eggs 1 at a time allowing to blend into the mixture, then stir in the milk and the pumpkin puree. Stir in the previously set aside mixture until everything has been mixed evenly.
3. Bake in the oven for around 20-25 minutes or until lightly golden. Once removed from the oven cool on a wire rack.
4. While the cupcakes are cooling you can begin to make the frosting. Use the electric mixer to beat the cream cheese and the butter together. Once smooth, add in the icing sugar a little at a time until its all mixed together, you can then add the vanilla extract and cinnamon and ice the cupcakes once cool.

I iced my cupcakes with a piping bag and a nozzle (although it doesn’t look like it) but you could also just spread straight onto the cupcake with a spoon. I’m really not very good at icing with a piping bag but I thought I’d give it a shot! I only just about had enough frosting for the 19 cupcakes I made, there definitely wasn’t enough mixture for 24 cupcakes. I didn’t take any pictures of me actually making the cupcakes or icing them as I’m extremely messy when baking but here are a few more pictures of the finished result..

Has anyone else tried any Pumpkin related recipes? If so let me know by leaving a comment below!

Life Update | University

Hi Guys!

So it ’s been awhile since I’ve been here. Life always seems to take over and get in the way of things that you want to do the most. I always seem to be saying ‘I’ll do it later’ and then things never get done as I follow the same routine. I thought I’d give you an update of what’s new (not that there’s much tbh) and let you know that I’m going to try my absolute best to post regularly!

Well the only thing that’s changed in my life since my last post (What was in January may I add! Oops Sorry) is my job/university circumstance. I quit my job 2 weeks ago and have gone back to university for my third and final year to finish my degree! Eek! To think that in a few months time, I’ll be graduating (hopefully with a 2:1) is super exciting but also scary as I need to decide want I want to do after graduation.

I’ve decided to commute to university this year instead of staying on campus. I study at Coventry University,  its around 2 hours from my house and luckily my timetable isn’t too bad so I’m able to drive in when I need to. I have a couple of days in the week free so I’m hoping, (emphasis on hoping but don’t hold me to it) that I can crack on with my studies, and post as much as I can. With a new routine I feel like I can do anything!

I have lots of posts planned for the following months – All things Autumnal, Halloween and Christmas so keep an eye out for them!

Happy Reading!
